In Qatar, much of food waste ends up in landfills that are quickly filling up, with little capacity left. These wastes pose a significant risk to the environment and public health.
Food wastes contribute heavily to the emissions of greenhouse gases when the waste breaks down in the landfill it generates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere.
Given equal amounts of methane and carbon dioxide, methane absorbs 86 times more heatthan carbon dioxide.
Qatar’s national climate change action plan aims at achieving a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
About 104 countries have promised to cut their methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030 at COP26 to UNFCCC.
